Both the Ram boys and girls track and field teams placed fourth at the Panorama Kip Janvrin Coed Invitational held Tuesday in Panora. The weather was warm and breezy, but not blustery. “What a wonderful night for a track and field meet,” girls coach Derek Merk said.
The 4 X 200m relay team of Olivia Shannon, Natalie Heupel, Makalya Kafer and Brianna Osterson grabbed the team’s only first place finish in track events with a time a 1:51.68, a season best and three seconds faster than their previous season best. The same quartet placed third in the 4 X 100m relay in 52.96 seconds, also a season best by more than one second.
Kafer, Natalie Heupel, Katrina Heupel and Osterson placed fourth in the 4 X 400m relay with a time of 4:41.76. Gretah Johnson, Caroline Kellogg, Annie Twillie and Grace Hardaway placed fourth in the distance medley with a time of 5:19.55.
Katrina Heupel set a personal record in the 800m run with a time of 2:41.20, giving her a third place finish. She also set a personal record in the 400m dash with a time of 1:07.05, good for fifth place.
Other personal records were set by Kellogg and Ilse Hooper in the 200m dash, Savanna Shell in the 400m dash, and Hardaway in the 1500m run.
In field events, Osterson won the long jump with a lean of 15’ 8-1/2”. Brooklyn Olson won the shot put with a throw of 38’5”. She placed second in the discus, hurling the discus 102’4”.
Skylar Warnke set a personal record in the shot put.
“There were so may great team and individual performances last night,” coach Merk said. “It is exciting to see all the progress these girls are making and the team they are becoming.”
Harlan won the girls competition with 130 points. Other team scores were Panorama 88, Mount Ayr 87, Greene County 60, Madrid 52, Woodbine 48, Adair-Casey Guthrie Center 45, Glidden-Ralston 42, Woodward Granger 22, and Ogden 13.
Ram relay teams dominated in the boys competition. The 4 X 100m relay team of Jose Velazco, Bryce Staler, Richard Daugherty and Jaxon Warnke placed first with a time of 45.60 seconds. The same quartet won the 4 X 400m relay in 3:3y6.74. Velazco, Daugherty, Nathan Wailes and Warnke won the 4 X 200m relay in 1:34.97. Daugherty, Warnke, Stalder and Morton won the 4 X 110m shuttle hurdle in 1:04.88, a full 11 seconds faster than the second place ACGC team.
Jose Velazco, Morton, Luis Velazco and Wailes placed fifth in the 800m sprint medley relay with a time of 1:43.47. Reese Jennings, Brian Burris, Gavin Scheuermann and Josh Ewalt placed sixth in the distance medley with a time of 4:27.19.
In individual events, Jackson Morton won the 110m hurdles in 15.75 seconds.
Logan Woodruff placed third in the 3200m run with a time of 11:13.33. Daniel Rivera placed fourth in the 100m dash in 11.93 seconds, and Ethan Larsen placed sixth in the 1600 run with a time of 5:26.18. Larsen also placed sixth in the 400m dash in 58.44.
Stalder won the long jump with a leap of 22’ 1/4″, almost three feet further than his closest competitor. Jose Velazco placed sixth at 19’ 2-1/4”.
Blake Hammen placed fifth in the discus throw with a distance of 107’. Ewalt was sixth with a throw of 106’3”. Ewalt also placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 40’ 10”.
ACGC won the boys meet with 150 points. Other team scores were Woodbine 114, Mount Ayr 97, Woodward Granger 53, Glidden-Ralston 48, Ogden 36, and Panorama 4.
Coach Chad Morton said he was “very happy with our efforts at this meet.” He said there were many personal records set, and “many great efforts for athletes running certain events for the first time.”
